Curriculum Vitae

Andrew Binnie was born in Port Glasgow but spent his youthful years in Largs, attending Largs High School and Ardrossan Academy before going on to study Drawing and Painting at the Glasgow School of Art. After teacher training at Jordanhill College of Education and National Service in the Royal Air Force, he came to Roxburghshire in 1960 as a peripatetic Teacher of Art, visiting schools in and around Hawick. His wife Kathleen (nee Scrimgeour) whom he had met at GSA had also qualified as an Art Teacher and went back to teach at Hawick High School where she had been a pupil.

Subsequently Drew was appointed to the Art Department of the Berwickshire High School in Duns and finally became Principal Teacher of Art & Design at Earlston High School until his retirement. He and Kathleen have lived in Kelso since 1974.

Throughout his teaching career, Drew has continued to paint and exhibit. His work has often featured in the major Scottish exhibitions such as The Royal Scottish Academy, The Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts and the Society of Scottish Artists. He has also held many one-man shows, as well as several with his eldest daughter Carol who is at present Curriculum Leader of Expressive Arts at the Royal High School in Edinburgh.

In 2007 Hawick Museum and Art Gallery staged a Retrospective Exhibition of Drew's work over four decades. Many works acquired by collectors were on show, including the Duke of Edinburgh's painting, 'House Among Trees, Bowmont Valley' which was purchased from the Royal Scottish Academy in 1982.

Examples of Drew's work can be seen at the Coldstream Gallery, Berwickshire, and often at the Torrance Gallery, Edinburgh.
